Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune, kept carpenters working on her San Jose farmhouse from 1886 until her death in 1922. The result is a rambling Victorian mansion of roughly 160 rooms, with stairs that stop at ceilings and doors that open onto walls. It opened for public tours in 1923 and has drawn the curious ever since.
